Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Kevin Banks, Talent Acquisition Manager

As Resident Services Director at Carriage Court Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating Meaningful Moments Through Connection

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

Every interaction becomes an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also benefit from the emotional and social comfort that comes with genuine human connection.

To me, community in senior living means operating with transparency and maintaining the expectation that we support one another. Our shared goal is simple: deliver excellence in every resident experience.

Building connections is essential to creating meaningful moments. By learning residents’ interests and emotions, we can anticipate their needs. Forming deeper relationships fuels my creativity and inspires new ways to enhance daily life. Over time, these relationships grow beyond care — they feel like family.

I encourage residents to engage with one another by building rapport through humor and genuine conversation. When residents feel comfortable with me, they often feel more open to trying activities and meeting new people. For example, during Cards with Friends, I pair experienced players with others who share their enthusiasm. Friendships begin naturally from there.

Strengthening Ties Within and Beyond Carriage Court

Connecting our community to the surrounding town is also a priority. Through our Resident Experiences program, I’ve partnered with the Hilliard Library, Ten Pins Bowling, The Well Recreation Center, local faith communities, and the Hilliard Chamber of Commerce. These partnerships broaden our event offerings and bring exciting opportunities such as live entertainment, dance lessons, and magic shows. Each one adds joy and variety to residents’ days.

One of my favorite events is our painting class. The turnout is always wonderful. I am amazed by the residents’ focus and creativity. With soft lighting and ambient music, the experience feels almost meditative. Residents become immersed in the moment.

Welcoming new residents is another important part of building community. Small gestures matter — a warm smile, gentle guidance when someone seems unsure, or an introduction to a neighbor. Many residents simply want to share their stories. I make time to listen. Later, I follow up on those conversations to show that their words matter. These moments create a true sense of belonging.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director at Carriage Court Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these relationships can transform our building into a true home and create memories that residents and their families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
