Carriage Court Senior Living Debunks Myths Surrounding Memory Care

Category: Dementia Resources

Author: Shemika Morris, Memory Care Director

There are several myths surrounding memory care, the specialized attention for individuals with memory impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. It’s important to debunk these myths to promote a better understanding of memory care by providing accurate information to help families find the right level of care at the right time for their loved ones.

Living in a Memory Care Neighborhood does not take away the independence of individuals with dementia. In our Neighborhood all staff are trained to find what our residents with dementia still can do and empower them through daily living and events. We as humans thrive when we feel helpful or purposeful. We implement this with person-centered care. Some examples are encouraging residents to comb their own hair, if they can, or help fold laundry. They still can do the tasks it just may take longer and look different.

I’d like to say we know our residents very well. Our Neighborhood utilizes engagement plans which are very thorough with details of likes, dislikes, hobbies, and bathing preference. Having this in place allows us to tailor person-centered care to everyone to promote cheerfulness and encouragement throughout daily living and social events.

Unfortunately, dementia is increasing in the younger population with the age of someone living with it as early as 30, due to rare cases such as hormone disorders or inflammatory conditions. No matter the age, if someone is living with the diagnosis, our Neighborhood is equipped to care for them.

Residents who are placed in memory care settings that are safe and secure have been found to thrive. With increased independence, socialization through events, life enriching programming, and weight gain comes a more content and happier individual. It’s important to us to meet these needs to keep the remaining abilities of our residents stimulated.

As the Memory Care Director at Carriage Court Senior Living, I hope this information helps provide a better picture of an Arrow Memory Care Neighborhood. It is important to gather accurate data to dispel myths and make informed decisions regarding memory care for yourself or a loved one.
