Each year, I select a Word of the Year—a simple yet powerful word that guides my personal and professional focus. As the Executive Director at Carriage Court Senior Living in Columbus, Ohio, the start of a new year feels like the perfect opportunity to reset, refocus, and prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead. My chosen word becomes an anchor, shaping how I lead my team, support families, and care for residents. Reflecting on 2024, I am amazed by how much my Word of the Year influenced my journey.
My Word of the Year for 2024 was growth. This word perfectly captured a season of expansion and new opportunities. It represented both professional and personal advancement as I returned to college—a significant step toward lifelong learning—while also preparing to welcome my fourth child. These experiences taught me the art of balancing ambition with family life. They reinforced the importance of continuous self-improvement, determination, and adaptability as both a leader and a parent.
Growth shaped every aspect of my year. It encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, embrace opportunities for transformation, and navigate challenges with resilience. Returning to college required juggling academics, parenting, and my career, which strengthened my adaptability and time-management skills. This mindset extended to my leadership, as I focused on fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for my team. Growth became more than a goal—it evolved into a mindset for approaching life with confidence and perseverance.
The lessons from 2024 will continue to guide me as I enter 2025. My second year of college and ongoing leadership responsibilities will build on this foundation of growth. The focus on persistence, balance, and adaptability from this year has prepared me to reach for even greater achievements.
For 2025, my Word of the Year is thrive. This word signifies flourishing in every area of life while maintaining balance and sustaining success. Thrive reflects the desire to excel, not just maintain progress, and to embrace personal and professional growth with intention and enthusiasm.
With thrive as my guide, I aim to cultivate an environment where residents, families, and team members can also flourish. By focusing on excellence and well-being, I hope to inspire those around me to reach their full potential.
As 2025 approaches, I am reflecting on the lessons of 2024 and stepping into a new chapter with excitement and intention. Choosing a Word of the Year is not about having all the answers. It’s about setting an intention and being open to the journey it inspires.
