Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I preferred a packed lunch because I often didn’t care for the school-provided meals. Back then, we didn’t have as many options as students do today. My favorite thing to find in my lunch was a bagel with cream cheese, which is still one of my favorites. I packed my lunch because I liked having the freedom to choose what I wanted. I think parents and kids often buy lunches nowadays because it’s more convenient.
If I could create one school lunch item from scratch, it would be Mexican Pizza. It was delicious, but I did not know what sauce they used. Creating the ultimate school lunch menu would be challenging because of the variety of diets and allergies today.
Packing school lunches and meal prepping as an adult are similar. It would help to have a plan or menu ready for the week, so you’re not scrambling to assemble something. To ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal, include a protein as the main option, add some fruit or vegetables, and maybe a sweet treat for the end of the meal.
The packaging of the lunch makes a big difference, especially for children. The visual appearance is often what draws their attention.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit the Carriage Court Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
